What is block periodization in strength training?

Block periodization splits a training year into short, focused phases — each developing one quality at a time — instead of training everything at once. A typical sequence runs accumulation → transmutation → realization, with each block lasting two to four weeks.

The three blocks

  • Accumulation — high volume, moderate intensity. Build work capacity, muscle, and a base of general strength.
  • Transmutation — moderate volume, higher intensity. Convert that base into the specific strength or power the sport demands.
  • Realization — low volume, high intensity, low fatigue. Peak and express the result, e.g. on a competition platform.

Why coaches use it

Concentrating one adaptation per block produces a larger, cleaner stimulus than spreading attention thin. It also makes fatigue easier to manage: you load hard, then deload into the next block’s emphasis.
